For most people, it begins in a courtroom.

A judge imposes a sentence. A family walks out carrying paperwork they barely understand. Someone is told where to report, or perhaps they aren’t told yet. Suddenly there are questions no one seems prepared to answer.

What happens when I surrender?

What should I bring?

How will my family communicate with me?

Where will I be sent?

What happens during reception and classification?

Can my family send money?

What about my medications?

What do I tell my children?

And perhaps the biggest question of all:

How am I supposed to prepare for something I know absolutely nothing about?

I know that feeling because I’ve lived it.

Years ago, I entered the Florida prison system myself. I wasn’t entering as a prison consultant, advocate, author, or someone who understood corrections. I was simply a woman facing prison and trying to understand what was about to happen to my life and my family.

What I discovered was that there was an enormous gap between the legal process of being sentenced and the reality of actually living through incarceration.

That gap is where Prison101 was born.

What No One Tells You

The criminal justice system prepares you for court. It does not necessarily prepare you for prison.

Your attorney’s job is your legal case. But once sentencing is over, an entirely different set of questions begins.

Prison has its own language, procedures, timelines, rules, and culture. Small decisions made before incarceration can affect what happens after you arrive. Your documents matter. Your medical information matters. Your classification matters. What you say during intake matters. How your family prepares matters.

And one of the first things I tell people is this:

Preparation will not make incarceration easy. But being unprepared can make an already difficult experience much harder.

That preparation shouldn’t begin the night before surrender.

It begins with understanding what lies ahead, organizing your affairs, preparing your family, asking the right questions, and separating what you can control from what you cannot.

That is what I want Prison101 to do.

Take something frightening and unfamiliar, and make it understandable.

We’ll talk about sentencing and self-surrender. Reception and classification. Prison designation and transfers. Medical preparation. Communication and visitation. Family support. Daily life inside. Reentry. And the countless questions that arise somewhere in between.

Some of what I share will come from my professional work as a prison consultant and advocate. Some will come from years of studying correctional systems and helping individuals and families navigate them.

And some of it will come from having lived it myself.

My goal is simple.

To give you the information I wish someone had given me.
